VICE CHANCELLOR PROFESSOR DOREEN ZANDILE MOYO

Professor Doreen Zandile Moyo joined the Gwanda State University (GSU) in March 2021. She is the second substantive Vice-Chancellor to lead GSU, following Professor Ntombizakhe Mlilo.

 Professor D.Z. Moyo is an Animal Parasitologist and holds the following qualifications: a Bachelor of Science Honours degree in Biological Sciences from UZ in 1988, a Master of Philosophy degree in Veterinary Parasitology from UZ in 1992, and a PhD in Veterinary Parasitology from UZ in 1999. She is a seasoned academic who has risen through the academic ranks, starting as a Research Assistant in the Biological Sciences Department at UZ in 1989.

She then served as a Research Fellow in the Department of Paraclinical Veterinary Studies at UZ from 1993 to 1997, and later as a Lecturer in the Department of Biological Sciences at Midlands State University. She has also held positions as a Senior Lecturer and Associate Professor. In 1999, she was a Research Officer at the Institute of Water and Sanitation Development (IWSD). Professor D.Z. Moyo joined Midlands State University in March 2000 and was the founding Chairperson of the Department of Biological Sciences. In 2010, she was appointed Executive Dean of Research and Postgraduate Studies. In 2016, she was appointed Pro Vice-Chancellor responsible for Research and Academic Affairs, a position she held until February 2021. Professor Moyo has published extensively in international, regional, and national refereed journals and has presented many conference papers.

She is a peer reviewer for several journals and a reviewer for the Zimbabwe Council of Higher Education (ZIMCHE). Professor Moyo has supervised several Master’s and PhD students and is also a PhD thesis examiner. She is a member of several University committees, including the Council and Senate and their related committees. Professor Moyo has also served as a board member of the Global Fund (Zimbabwe), the Standing Committee on Natural Resources, and as a member of the Research Council of Zimbabwe (RCZ) International Symposium Organizing Committee. She is a member of several professional and academic associations, such as the World Association for the Advancement of Veterinary Parasitology (W.A.A.V.P.) and the Southern Africa Research and Innovation Management Association (SARIMA).

In 2022, Prof Moyo was appointed a board member of the Zimbabwe Research and Education Network (ZIMREN). In July 2024, Prof Moyo was appointed Deputy Chairperson for the Zimbabwe Schools Examination Council (ZIMSEC).
