Research and Innovation Lead Officer (1 Post)
Job Summary
As the Innovation Lead, you will play a pivotal role in driving the University’s innovation agenda within the scientific disciplines. You will be responsible for identifying, nurturing, and commercializing promising research outputs with high commercial potential. You will act as a bridge between our talented researchers, industry partners, and investors, fostering a dynamic ecosystem for innovation.
Qualifications and Experience

Applicants must have a minimum of an MSc degree in Engineering, Applied Sciences, Agriculture – Animal Science/Crop Science, Food Science or other related field from an accredited institution, and demonstrated experience in research, innovation and technology transfer to commercialisation.

A BSc Degree in Engineering, Applied Sciences, Agriculture – Animal Science/Crop Science, Food Science or other related field from an accredited institution.

A minimum of five (5) years’ working experience of which two (2) years’ experience must be in research, innovation and/or management of a business venture;
-
The candidate should have a proven track record in multidisciplinary research, collaboration, and/or management of partnerships. The ideal candidate should have experience in interacting with students and/or teaching and learning.

Should have a minimum of one (1) publication or equivalent such as patents/industrial designs.
Duties and Responsibilities
-
Proactively collaborate with faculty and researchers to identify novel research with commercialisation potential.
-
Evaluate and assess the commercial viability of scientific discoveries, considering market needs and intellectual property (IP) landscape.
-
Develop and implement strategies for protecting, managing, and commercialising the University’s IP.
-
Foster a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship within the university community, providing mentorship and guidance to researchers on translating ideas into marketable solutions.

Oversee the incubation and acceleration of promising scientific ventures, providing resources and mentorship to student and faculty entrepreneurs.
-
Develop and implement programs and workshops to equip researchers with essential skills in innovation management, technology transfer, and entrepreneurship.

Track and analyze innovation metrics, identifying areas for improvement and ensuring alignment with the University’s strategic goals.

Stay abreast of the latest trends and developments in science and technology transfer to identify emerging opportunities.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate should possess academic and/or professional qualifications from a recognised institution, preferably to the level of a Doctorate Degree in Environmental Engineering/Mining Engineering/ Metallurgical Engineering or related field.

Professorship in Environmental Engineering/Mining Engineering/ Metallurgical Engineering or related field would be an added advantage. Experience and Qualities

At least five (5) years post qualification experience in an institution of Higher Learning, of which two (2) years should have been as a Chairperson in an academic department.

Duties and Responsibilities

Providing academic leadership in the areas of teaching, learning, research, innovation and industrialisation.

Positioning the Faculty within the national higher education policy in line with Education 5.0.

Overall planning, development, renewal and changing of academic programmes to ensure meaningful academic outcomes, quality, effectiveness and financial viability.

Participating in the formulation, implementation and evaluation of the academic policies of the University.

Setting up the necessary structures that will ensure that ethical and accountable research in the Faculty is relevant and of high quality leading to prototypes, patents and copyrights in line with the University’s research, innovation and industrialisation policy.

Establishing a sound culture of innovation and industrialisation in the Faculty.

Mobilising resources for the Faculty and University.

Marketing the Faculty nationally, regionally and internationally.

DEPARTMENT OF MINING ENGINEERING - Lecturer/Senior Lecturer/Associate Professor/Full Professor (3 Posts) : Mining Engineering
Applicants must have a BSc (Hons) Degree or equivalent in Mining Engineering with at least an upper second (2.1) degree classification and a Master’s Degree in Mining Engineering or equivalent. A PhD qualification in Mining Engineering and a teaching experience at a university will be an added advantage. The candidate must be able to teach any three modules in the Department of Mining Engineering. The applicant is expected to actively engage in research and innovation activities in his/her area of specialisation leading to tangible products and services.
Mining Engineering Technician (1 Post)
Applicants must have a Bachelor of Science (Hons) Degree in Mining Engineering or equivalent with at least an upper second class (2.1) degree classification, a Mine Blasting License. One (1) year industrial experience in the mining industry will be an added advantage. The candidate must be able to assist in research, support field wok and assist in conducting practicals.
DEPARTMENT OF METALLURGICAL ENGINEERING Lecturer/ Senior Lecturer/ Associate Professor/ Full Professor (1 Post): Fuels and Energy
Applicants must have a BSc (Hons) Degree in Fuels and Energy or equivalent with at least an upper second (2.1) degree classification and a Master’s Degree in Fuels and Energy, Chemical Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Materials Engineering, or Mineral Processing. A relevant PhD qualification and teaching experience at a university will be an added advantage. The successful candidate will be expected to teach at least three of the following modules in the Metallurgical Engineering Department: Fuels, Energy and Environment, Heat and Mass Transfer and Electrical Principles. The successful candidate will be expected to actively engage in research and innovation activities in his/her area of specialisation leading to tangible products and services.

Applicants must have a BSc (Hons) Degree or equivalent in Surveying or Geomatics and Surveying with at least an upper second (2.1) degree classification and a Master’s Degree in Surveying or Geomatics and Surveying. A PhD qualification in Surveying or Geomatics and Surveying and a teaching experience at a university will be an added advantage. The candidate should be able to teach any three of the following modules: Engineering Survey, land Law, Rural and Spatial Planning, Hydrographic Surveying, Surveying CAD, Environmental design/planning, Mine Survey, Cadastral Survey, Surveying CAD, and Survey Computations.
