Gwanda State University sponsored six (6) students’ prizes and pledged scholarships for Filabusi High School at the 2026 Prize Giving Day Ceremony held yesterday. The announcement was made during an event which ran under the theme “Celebrating teachers
and students’ achievement while encouraging to strive for greatness” The six prizes were awarded to the best performing female students from form one to upper six.

Addressing teachers, parents and students attending the event, the Vice-Chancellor Professor DZ Moyo pledged 2 scholarships that will run from 2026 to 2030.

“To contribute to the higher education sectorial outcome of increased access to quality, equitable and inclusive education, Gwanda State University is pledging the following: (1) A full Work For Fees scholarship to one female student in any of the degree programmes that are offered by the University, (2) A Full scholarship to one students with a disability to any of our degree programmes”, said Professor DZ Moyo.

She added that the University was going to work with local high schools to introduce Science Clinics during school holidays in a bid to increase the number of students enrolling in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) programmes.

The Vice-Chancellor also took the opportunity to tell the Gwanda State University story and encouraging prospective students to join the University of choice.

“GSU is a STEM University teaching mining related engineering programmes as well as agricultural disciplines. STEM disciplines are central to the socio-economic development of the country. STEM education drives the country’s technological advancement leading to industrialisation. My dear students, you may wish to know that STEM fields are among the fastest growing and highest paying industries. It therefore pays to study with GSU and I strongly recommend that you consider GSU as the University of first choice for your degree studies. To wet your appetite, you may wish to know that the University is finalising the construction and equipmentation of state of the art engineering and agro-innovation laboratories which will take teaching learning at GSU to another level”, Vice-Chancellor alluded.

She also underscored the importance education at individual and its role in transforming the societies.

“Education helps individuals to develop critical thinking, problem solving skills and confidence to pursue their goals. A well-educated society drives innovation, productivity and competitiveness in the global economy. Education also promotes tolerance, empathy and civic responsibility, which are all necessary conditions for peaceful coexistence. Education opens doors to better jobs and financial stability, thus reducing poverty and inequality. Schools such as Filabusi High School provide technical, interpersonal skills that prepare individuals for diverse roles in society. A good education also gives one a positive mindset which is crucial for one to become a good citizen both at national and global level”, she added.

“At community level, education promotes social cohesion. Shared values and cultural understanding bring about Unity and reduce conflict. Communities with strong educational institutions such as Filabusi High School and Gwanda State University, often become centres of creativity and entrepreneurship. Educated communities make informed decisions about health care, nutrition, and family planning. Informed citizens can also engage in governance
and advocate for justice and equality. The scourge of drug and substance abuse among youth that is be-devilling our nation will be won when our youth are fully engaged at school, at home and in the community”, she added.

The Vice-Chancellor also congratulated students who excelled in their various disciplines. “A prize giving day is more than just a ceremony. It is about celebrating effort, discipline and perseverance. It is also a festival of talent resilience, and promise. Each smile here tells a story of hours of dedication, sleepless nights and the courage to keep going even when challenges seemed overwhelming. Let us therefore, celebrate not only the winners of prizes,
but the spirit of learning that makes each one of us a champion”, the Vice-Chancellor alluded.
