GSU 2025-2026 SEC Inaugurated

Gwanda State University (GSU) has successfully inaugurated the 2025-2026 GSU Student Executive Council (SEC) following the end of term of the 2024-2025 SEC.

The function, which was attended by the Vice-Chancellor Professor DZ Moyo, Registrar Mr E Mupfiga, Dean of Students Mrs S Ncube, amongst other delegates, saw the swearing-in of 14 SEC members representing 14 portfolios.

Officiating the SEC inauguration, the Vice-Chancellor appreciated the immense contribution to the institution by the outgoing SEC. “I must first acknowledge and appreciate the outgoing SEC for its contribution to the University during the 2024-2025 academic year. The year was fraught with volatility due to inflation and price increases, but you diligently led the students and made sound decisions that ensured peace and stability in the University,” said the Vice- Chancellor.

The Vice-Chancellor went on to challenge the incoming SEC to emulate their predecessors and even go an extra mile in serving the student body and the University during their tenure.

“As incoming leaders, you have been tasked to lead the GSU student body and your predecessors have set a high standard that you need to emulate or even surpass. As enunciated in your SEC constitution, you should uphold principles of transparency, accountability, responsibility and participation within the student body,” the Vice-Chancellor alluded.

The newly elected student body will be expected to work with the University management through various University committees such as Council, Senate and other lower committees.

“It is a statutory body of the University at the same level of importance as Council, Senate, and this comes with obligations. It is my expectation that SEC and Management will work together to solve problems according to the policies and rules of the University,” said Professor DZ Moyo.

The Vice-Chancellor reiterated that servant leadership was key to the newly elected student body as it embodies good leadership skills towards the betterment of students and the University at large.

“The grooming that you will undergo through various capacity building initiatives will make you better leaders as well as prepare you for leadership positions in future. Servant leadership is required of you,” Prof DZ Moyo alluded. The Vice-Chancellor also drew the attention of the new SEC to the importance of embracing diversity in the University during their tenure.

“The University is a melting pot with students from diverse backgrounds and it is a common cause that diversity is a fact, but inclusion is a choice we make on a daily basis. As leaders, we have to put out the message that we embrace and tolerate diversity. Embrace diversity, peace, democracy, progress and eliminate racism, tribalism, regionalism and despotism,” added the Vice-Chancellor.

The SEC members were encouraged to work with the Dean of Students, various divisions of Student Affairs, and to closely work with the corresponding University structures.

To ensure adequate service delivery in the teaching and learning of students, the Vice- Chancellor indicated that timely fees payment was crucial and payment plans had been unveiled to willing students.

“Students should register on time so as to be bona fide students as well as enable the University to provide you with services such as WIFI, electricity, water and a conducive living and learning environment. I expect you to encourage your colleagues to register and pay fees on time. The University has come up with a fees payment plan that will ensure that willing students register before payment of the mandatory 60% of fees,” added the Vice- Chancellor.

Prof DZ Moyo also cautioned SEC members on drug and substance abuse, highlighting that offenders were going to be dealt with.

“Drug and substance abuse is rampant among youth and I urge you to make Gwanda State University a drug-free zone. The Security Office and ZRP will work closely with the University and student body to ensure that this happens. Culprits will be dealt with without fear or favour,” alluded the Vice-Chancellor.

Speaking on behalf of the SEC members, the newly elected SEC President, Hon Rukudzo Confidence Chinzou, thanked the University administration for inspiration and guidance. They pledged that they will uphold what is expected of them towards the growth of the University.
